What languages does Diction offer for translations?

Diction provides translations in virtually every conceivable language combination, including all regional variants. Of course, some languages are requested more frequently by our clients. These include: German–English, English–German, German–French, French–German, French–English, English–French, German–Italian, Italian–German, English–Italian. But we also offer Romansh, Swedish, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Arabic, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and many more. We also use the exact regional variant you need. For example, German for Switzerland or Germany, British or US English, French for French-speaking Switzerland, France, Canada, Belgium, etc.

How can I start a project or request a quote?

It lets you to manage every aspect of your collaboration with us: request quotes, place orders, update existing orders, add special requests, track the delivery status and manage invoices. If you have a very short text and don’t want to upload a document, simply enter the two or three sentences directly into a text field. Your order will be processed in seconds. Does Diction have experts for Swiss language varieties?

Yes. As a Swiss company, we have experts for all Swiss languages and regional varieties. We offer translation, proofreading, and content creation in Swiss Standard German and all dialects. The same goes for Swiss French and Swiss Italian. Our editors and translators know the dialects, regional nuances and neologisms. Many influences from German and Italian can be found in Swiss French, such as “poutser” (from the German “putzen” – to clean) or “sans autre” (from the Italian “senz’altro” – without further ado). What is the difference between translation, post-editing and editing?

Translation means transferring a text fully from one language to another, while preserving meaning, style and context. This can be done by humans or AI – though greater human involvement usually results in better style and coherence 😉.
Editing involves reviewing a text in one language for accuracy, style, tone and logical flow. If you prefer minimal intervention, proofreading is the right choice – it focuses only on actual errors regarding spelling, grammar.
Post-editing means a human expert reviews machine-generated text to correct typical AI errors and raise quality to professional standards. Essentially, it’s a form of editing – but post- only applied to AI-generated translations (if needed), whereas traditional editing is for existing texts.

Does Diction have its own in-house language professionals?

Absolutely. Our in-house team includes highly experienced specialists in translation, editing, post-editing, copywriting, language consulting, glossary creation and more. You can discuss any linguistic challenges with one of our native speakers, or collaborate with our in-house Language Consulting Managers to develop writing guidelines or define your tone of voice – they manage projects and handle the editing themselves. We’re happy to visit your office with our language professionals or answer any project questions via video call as well. Of course, we also work with a trusted network of highly qualified external experts – because our goal is always to select the best specialist for every project. Will Diction use my glossary for translations?

Of course! If you provide your glossary, we’ll integrate it to ensure translators and proofreaders consistently use the correct terminology. And if you don’t have one – or need it updated, cleaned up, or extended to other languages – we’ll gladly take care of that for you. We’ve helped numerous companies improve their in-house text production with tone of voice guidelines, writing rules and glossaries. What is a translation memory, and how can I benefit from it?

A translation memory stores your previous translations and suggests them whenever similar or identical sentences appear in future projects. Translators can then decide whether to accept the suggested translation, depending on the similarity of the new text and whether the context seems appropriate. This system saves all of us time and money. You can count on us not to start from scratch with every text. Standard phrases, taglines and legal notices are always translated in the same way, and outdated wording can be updated or removed. Translation memories are usually integrated into CAT tools. 

Are translation memories still useful when translating with AI?

Absolutely, now more than ever. Our Diction AI tool for example incorporates your translation memory when generating text and is also trained with your terminology. This ensures your standard sentences, templates, and stored texts are applied in every AI translation.

How does API or connector integration work?

Integration works by linking your system to ours via a connector or API interface. You can use existing plug-ins or add-ons for e-commerce, DAM, PIM systems, and CMS to send your texts to our system through the Diction connector. The Diction connector is compatible with most middleware solutions. If you need technical specifications for connecting to our API, just contact us. How fast can Diction deliver your texts?

When time is critical, Diction delivers fast – without compromising quality. We’re known across Switzerland for our high-quality express service.
However, not all express jobs are the same: some clients know days in advance that a text will need to be translated quickly at a specific time. If that’s the case, advance notice helps us allocate the best resources – ready exactly when you need them.

Even if an urgent project catches you (and us) by surprise, we can usually make it happen. Last-minute requests don’t make us panic (someone has to remain calm – and it may not be you 😉). However, it’s important to please let us know (by telephone, email or in the project portal) exactly when you need the texts. If you need 30 pages translated in 2 hours, we will work together to find a solution – for example, with your permission, we can split the text between several translators. AI speeds things up, but even machine translation can’t completely eliminate time constraints. So please give us as much time as you can. And if that’s still very little time, we’ll find a way together.

What is the difference between simplified language and plain language?
Plain language uses an even simpler level of language. It represents the most accessible and basic form of communication. Plain language roughly corresponds to A1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, while simplified language falls between A2 and B1. Simplified language still allows for simple subordinate clauses and slightly longer sentences. It may also include everyday terms, even if they’re not the absolute simplest way to express an idea.
